The Tower of London, one of the six venues cared for by independent charity Historic Royal Palaces, welcomed 120 guests to a special ‘Ménagerie À Tower’ event .
Inspired by the Tower’s menagerie, London’s very first zoo of exotic animals that existed from the 1200s to 1835, the immersive event saw the White Tower transformed for guests such as L’Oreal, Disney, UNICEF and Goldman Sachs.
Guests arrived via the Middle Drawbridge and were met by an array of colour and animal sounds, with the wire sculptures of animals in situ at the Tower showcased with atmospheric uplighting.
The White Tower itself was awash with colour and projections, contrasting striking colours and images with the historic stone exterior.
Inside the Tower, the staircase leading to the first floor was decked in stunning foliage by Lavender Green to create a treehouse effect, as if guests were climbing into the jungle canopy. Guests enjoyed a drinks reception with canapes by Urban Caprice including sea bass ceviche; shiitake mushroom crispy sushi; and lamb & artichoke beignet.
Upstairs in the East Chamber, guests entered a cocktail ‘safari lodge’, with four cocktail stations by Urban Caprice: Tiger, serving a tequila cocktail; Elephant, serving a rum & pineapple mojito; Lion, serving espresso martinis and Polar Bear, serving gin & campari.
Guests were also treated to three food stations named Omnivore, Carnivore and Herbivore, offering dishes such as curry leaf cured salmon with rainbow slaw; steak tartare with smoked beetroot; and spiced pumpkin & Jerusalem artichoke salad with blood orange, mograbiah & hazelnut hummus.
Themed sweet canapes followed, including leopard print choc orange truffles and zebra print sea salt caramel truffles, along with ice-cream rolls by Pan Ice.
Roaming actors from Sternberg Clarke engaged with the crowd, telling stories of the animals that once lived in the Tower such as lions and polar bears, with background music provided by a DJ.
Laura Drake, events manager at the Tower of London, said: “We were thrilled to welcome so many guests to enjoy the Tower of London’s transformation into a magical Ménagerie, transporting guests to a lesser known period of the Tower’s storied history! Recognising the trend for ever-more immersive event experiences, it was a fantastic way for the team to showcase the Tower’s vast event capabilities and skill for stand-out theming.
“The event was also a great way for us to communicate Historic Royal Palaces’ charitable cause, as all events held at the Palaces contribute towards conserving these iconic venues and ensuring they remain well maintained and open for all to enjoy.”
Suppliers on the night included Urban Caprice (catering), Event Concept (production), Lavender Green (florals), Sternberg Clarke (entertainment), Pan Ice (dessert), Great Hire (furniture).
