Empire Cinemas has announced that it will now be stocking environmentally friendly drinking straws made entirely from recyclable paper.
Empire Cinemas are the first national cinema in the UK who plan to cut down on their plastic usage and will roll out the alternative solution to plastic straws across all of its sites, commencing with Swindon and Birmingham Great Park.
The move follows recent media coverage highlighting the concerning amount of plastic straws blighting the UK’s oceans, rivers and lakes. According to the Marine Conservation Society1, the UK uses an estimated 8.5bn plastic straws a year, which take hundreds of years to decompose.
Gordon MacDonald, F&B director of Empire Cinemas said: “We are proud to begin stocking paper straws across our estate and are committed to reducing our use of plastic. The impact we have on the environment is of the utmost importance to the team at Empire Cinemas and we are committed to rolling paper straws out across all of our UK sites by October 2018, playing our part in helping the environment.”
